Great Moments In Laker History

Truly Hooked on Magic
By: Chris Manning (LD2k)

Los Angeles Lakers 103, San Diego Clippers 102
October 12, 1979

Magic and KareemWhen Magic Johnson’s first professional game drew closer to the end, his teammate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored the winning basket on a breathtaking 18-foot sky hook that fell at the buzzer to give the Lakers the victory. To Kareem’s surprise, Magic ran up to Kareem and jumped into his arms and squeezed him tightly, similar to how he gestured toward his college teammates 7 months prior in the NCAA championship victory.

Kareem then looked at the young enthusiastic Magic Johnson and told him, “We got 81 more games, quit choking me!” In fact, after the shot fell, Magic never really seemed to come down from that victory. As every other teammate knew, it was just a simple victory, not a championship. But to Magic Johnson, it was far more than just a victory. It was everything to live for.

This moment began an era of basketball in Los Angeles which eventually led them to many NBA championships. When the Lakers went on to win the championship later that year, the enthusiastic Magic Johnson celebrated once again. Acting like he did the first game of the season, showing the competitiveness within himself and his willingness to win. A moment that shall never be forgotten, a moment that shows what basketball truly was in the 80’s.
